In the first season, Darken Rahl was defeated by Richard but we are not really sure if Darken Rahl was truly destroyed or he has just laid dormant and unseen. What Richard did not know is that the defeat of Darken Rahl triggered the opening of the rift into the underworld. This makes Season 2 of this series inevitable.
